India's rPET boom will be won in the cloud, not the factory
...India's textile industry stands at the center of one of the biggest shifts underway in global manufacturing. As brands race to reduce their dependence on virgin polyester and governments tighten sustainability regulations, recycled polyester (rPET) is emerging as a critical growth engine for exporters. For years, recycled polyester was largely viewed as a sustainability add-on a material that helped brands improve their environmental credentials without significantly changing business operations. Today, however, the conversation has moved far beyond green marketing.
Recycled polyester is becoming a compliance-driven requirement, and for Indian manufacturers the challenge is no longer merely producing recycled yarn and fabrics. The bigger challenge is proving, with verifiable data, where those materials came from and how they moved through the supply chain. As per DataM Intelligence, the global recycled polyester market is projected to grow from $9.76 billion in 2025 to $37.91 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 14.48 per cent. The scale of the opportunity is enormous, but so are the compliance expectations attached to it.
Market growing beyond fashion
The increase in demand for recycled polyester is being driven by industries far beyond apparel. Packaging companies, automotive manufacturers, home furnishing brands, sportswear labels and FMCG companies are all competing for the same recycled PET feedstock. The pressure stems largely from tightening environmental regulations and corporate decarbonization commitments.

Europe's recycled-content mandates have become a major demand catalyst. PET bottles sold in the EU must contain at least 25 per cent recycled content from 2025, increasing to 30 per cent by 2030. These rules are intensifying competition for high-quality recycled feedstock and creating new opportunities for suppliers capable of meeting stringent traceability requirements.
India's strategic position
India is increasingly becoming a key node in the global recycled polyester ecosystem. Along with Southeast Asia, the country accounts for a significant portion of the region's recycling infrastructure, benefiting from abundant plastic waste streams, a large textile manufacturing base, and relatively competitive processing costs. The country's integrated textile value chain from fiber production to garment exports gives it a natural advantage in scaling recycled polyester adoption.
Many of India's leading textile exporters have already invested in bottle-to-fiber recycling facilities, recycled yarn production, and certified sustainable manufacturing systems. Global fashion brands sourcing from India are also pushing suppliers to increase recycled content across apparel, home textiles, and technical textile categories. However, capacity alone may no longer be enough. As Western markets tighten sustainability regulations, India's competitive edge will increasingly depend on its ability to provide transparent and audit-ready documentation.
Compliance challenge
The next phase of growth is being defined by data. European regulators, global retailers, and independent auditors now require evidence supporting every sustainability claim. Manufacturers must demonstrate whether feedstock originated from post-consumer bottles or industrial scrap, verify processing methods, maintain chain-of-custody certifications, and quantify environmental impacts.
For Indian exporters, this mean both an opportunity and a risk. Many recycling units in India still rely on fragmented waste collection networks involving aggregators, informal collectors, and multiple intermediaries. While these systems are highly efficient at gathering material, they often create documentation gaps that can complicate verification efforts. As greenwashing regulations become stricter across Europe and North America, incomplete records could result in delayed shipments, failed audits, or even loss of export contracts. The message from global buyers is becoming increasingly clear: recycled content without traceability is no longer enough.
Technology becomes the differentiator
Mechanical recycling remains the dominant technology across India's recycled polyester industry because of its cost efficiency and established infrastructure. However, the sector is also witnessing growing interest in chemical recycling technologies capable of converting polyester waste back into virgin-equivalent raw materials. These systems offer the possibility of true textile-to-textile recycling and could become critical as global brands seek higher-quality recycled inputs.
Alongside material innovation, digital technology is emerging as a major competitive differentiator. Artificial intelligence is being deployed to improve waste sorting, remove contaminants, and increase feedstock quality. More importantly, digital product passports and blockchain-enabled traceability systems are allowing manufacturers to track materials from waste collection through final production. For exporters serving Europe and North America, such systems are rapidly becoming a commercial necessity rather than a technological luxury.
Lessons for Indian exporters
Recent developments across global supply chains highlight a growing divide between manufacturers that treat sustainability as a material issue and those that view it as a data issue. Exporters relying on manual paperwork and fragmented record-keeping face increasing exposure to compliance risks. A single missing document or unverifiable feedstock source can jeopardize entire orders.
Conversely, manufacturers that integrate certification systems, digital tracking platforms, and real-time supply chain monitoring are finding themselves in a stronger position to secure long-term partnerships with international brands. Global buyers are increasingly selecting suppliers not simply on price or production capacity but on their ability to support sustainability reporting, Scope 3 emissions accounting, and regulatory compliance. This shift favors companies that can seamlessly deliver both products and proof.
India's next textile advantage
India has already established itself as a global textile powerhouse. The next challenge is transforming that manufacturing strength into a leadership position within the circular economy. The recycled polyester market offers a big opportunity for Indian exporters to capture higher-value business as global brands accelerate sustainability commitments. Yet access to that opportunity will depend increasingly on traceability, certification, and digital transparency.
In the coming decade, the most successful Indian textile companies may not be those producing the largest volumes of recycled fiber. They will be the ones capable of proving every step of the journey from discarded plastic bottle to finished garment. As recycled polyester moves from sustainability initiative to regulatory requirement, data is emerging as the industry's most valuable raw material. For India, mastering that reality could determine its position in the next generation of global textile trade.
