The Indian textile industry is facing intense price corrections as the cost of polyester staple fibre (PSF) sees upward movement. Recent market data indicates India has emerged as one of the most volatile corridors for synthetic materials globally. Driven by factors like rising crude oil prices, supply chain bottlenecks in the Red Sea, and a domestic increase in post-consumer bottle scrap prices, virgin PSF recently hit peaks of $1.45/kg before finding a temporary floor near the $1.30/kg mark. This rally is part of a broader global shift where raw material constraints and energy overheads are forcing manufacturers to adjust base rates almost weekly.

Feedstock pressures and regional price disparity

While global competitors like China maintain a level of relative price stability with virgin PSF holding at approximately $1.20/kg, Indian spinners and weavers are dealing with a more aggressive pricing environment. This puts immense pressure on Indian textile exports, particularly in the value-added yarn segment, where Indian exporters compete directly with Chinese mills on thin margins.

The situation in Pakistan is even more acute, with prices trending toward $1.50/kg, suggesting a regional supply tightening that could shift trade flows in the coming quarters. Analysts point to the rising costs of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) as the primary catalysts. Domestic PTA prices in India have seen a 7-9 per cent increase in the last quarter alone, leaving little room for margin absorption at the mill level.

Traditionally, recycled fibre commanded a substantial discount (often 20-30 per cent lower), but current Indian market rates have seen recycled variants climb to $1.20 per kg.

This convergence is due to a dual-force mechanism. First, the supply of high-quality PET bottle waste is struggling to keep pace with the massive scaling of recycling plants across Gujarat and Maharashtra. Second, a mandatory shift toward sustainable sourcing by global apparel giants has decoupled R-PET pricing from crude oil, tying it instead to sustainability premiums. For many Indian garment exporters, the decision between virgin and recycled is no longer purely financial; it is becoming a matter of compliance and long-term brand positioning.

Operational realities in Surat’s weaving hub

The impact of this volatility is best observed in the powerloom clusters of Surat. For instance, a medium-scale weaving unit producing 100 per cent polyester georgette fabrics recently reported a 12 per cent increase in production costs over a 45-day window.

"We are seeing a fundamental shift in the procurement cycle. Spinning units that previously operated on monthly contracts are now moving toward spot purchases or shorter pricing windows to avoid getting caught in the PSF volatility," says Rajesh Mehta, a veteran textile trade consultant. In this specific case study, the unit had to implement a surcharge model for its fabric buyers, a rare move in the competitive grey fabric market to avoid a total shutdown of looms. This highlights a broader trend: the inability of the downstream sector to absorb costs, leading to a direct inflationary impact on end-consumer apparel prices.

Logistics and the global risk premium

Beyond raw material, the logistics of synthetic textiles are facing a ‘risk premium’. Freight rates from Indian ports to Europe and the US East Coast have seen fluctuations due to geopolitical tensions, adding an invisible cost layer to the landed price of Indian polyester yarn. As Indian manufacturers look to compete with Vietnam and Bangladesh, these domestic price hikes in PSF act as a significant headwind.

These clusters find it difficult to pass on the 10-15 per cent increase in yarn costs to the final fabric price. As a result, capacity utilization in some regions has seen a marginal dip as players wait for price stability.

However, this environment also gives a unique opportunity for integrated players. Large-scale spinners who produce their own chips or have long-term feedstock tie-ups are leveraging their scale to secure better rates, potentially leading to a consolidation within the synthetic textile sector over the next fiscal year. The survivors of this price hike will likely be those who have successfully transitioned a portion of their portfolio to high-value, recycled specialty fibres that can command the necessary premiums.
