Brazil overtakes US as World's top cotton exporter in 2024
Brazil has surpassed the US as the world's leading cotton exporter in 2024, ending the US's decades-long dominance. This shift is due to an increase in Brazilian production because of increased acreage, technological advancements, and high-quality output.
Despite a slight dip in productivity, Brazil's 2023-24 cotton output reached a record 3.7 million tons, a 16.64 per cent increase year-on-year. While domestic demand has grown modestly, rising international prices have supported local cotton prices, encouraging further expansion.
The CEPEA/ESALQ cotton index in Brazil fluctuated within a narrow range in 2024, with prices generally lower than the previous year. However, the country's expanding production and strong international demand have solidified its position as a global cotton powerhouse.
