China's cotton yarn imports slowdown

China's cotton yarn imports declined in June for the third consecutive month. Total imports reached 96.6 kt, down from May and significantly lower than the same period last year. While overall imports for the first half of 2024 remain higher than the previous year, the downward trend is notable.
Vietnam continues to dominate the Chinese market, with a 52 per cent share, despite a slight decrease in June imports. Pakistan and Uzbekistan follow, though with fluctuating volumes. India's exports to China have declined due to increased domestic cotton prices.
Import patterns are shifting towards coarser yarns, with a significant increase in demand for below 8s count yarn. This trend is likely due to price competition from domestic yarn producers. Meanwhile, blended cotton yarn imports have remained relatively stable, driven by demand for traceable apparel products.
