Govt announces new textile policy to boost AP's economy, aims for Rs 10,000 crore investment
The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a new textile policy to stimulate the state’s economy by attracting investments worth Rs 10,000 crore to the textile sector. The state, which is the sixth-largest cotton producer in India, is poised to leverage its abundant raw materials to enhance value-added textile production. In 2022-23, AP produced 15.41 lakh bales of cotton, and the sector already hosts around 106 spinning mills and 12,635 power loom units.
Textiles and Handlooms Minister S Savitha highlighted that AP’s educational institutions are preparing a skilled workforce with specialized courses in textile technology. The government plans to set up skilling centers in Vizag and Raydurg to further meet industry demands. Despite limited progress in value-added segments like weaving, knitting, and technical textiles, the state sees substantial potential for growth and employment creation in these areas.
The new policy framework aims to boost integrated textile units and technical textiles, with the government already establishing seven textile parks and supporting private ones. The success of Brandix India Apparel City has set a strong precedent for future initiatives. The government is focused on scaling up Venkatagiri and Chirala textile parks and supporting private industrial developments to achieve large-scale employment and minimize environmental impact.
