Gujarat, North India mills source cotton amid quality concerns from rains
Spinning mills in Gujarat and North India have turned to cotton from Raichur, Karnataka, and Adoni, Andhra Pradesh, due to good quality amid concerns over crop conditions following heavy rains across India.
Ramanuj Das Boob, a sourcing agent, reports, early-sown cotton from Raichur has entered the market, priced between Rs 7,000-7,500 per quintal. Mills from Gujarat and North India are purchasing cotton from these regions because of its superior quality. Although recent rains have caused slight delays in arrivals, the quality has not been significantly affected, he explains
Cotton arrivals from Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana are delayed, with high moisture content affecting quality and spinning processes. Anand Popat, a Gujarat-based broker, stated that excessive rainfall could reduce India’s cotton production by 10 lakh bales. Factories in northern and central India are struggling to maintain RD (degree of reflectance) values due to the moisture, while South India experiences less severe challenges.
Quality improvement is expected in the coming month as moisture levels stabilise.
