Gujarat's Textile Industry Revives: Boosted by stable prices and surging demand
After a period of uncertainty, the textile industry in Gujarat is experiencing a much-needed surge, thanks to a combination of improved cotton demand and stabilized prices. This positive shift has brought renewed optimism to the state's textile hub, with spinning mills operating at near capacity and industry leaders predicting continued growth in the coming months.
The turnaround began with a significant increase in cotton demand, particularly from China. In the past month alone, Chinese buyers have snapped up a staggering 6,000 tonnes of cotton yarn from Gujarat, a clear indication of the growing appetite for the state's textile products. This demand growth has coincided with a welcome stability in cotton prices. This newfound price stability has instilled confidence in the market, allowing mills to operate efficiently and plan for future investments.
As Jayesh Patel, Senior Vice President of the Spinners' Association Gujarat (SAG) says, “The demand in the cotton market has definitely revived." He goes on to say, "Prices have stabilized, and yarn prices are also steady at Rs 235-237 per kg. This has boosted the purchasing capacity of traders in Ahmedabad, and the overall sentiment is very positive."
The impact of this revival is already being felt across the industry. Spinning mills, which form the backbone of Gujarat's textile production, are now operating at around 80 per cent capacity, a significant increase from recent months. This has led to increased employment, improved wages, and a general sense of optimism among textile workers.
Experts believe this positive trend is likely to continue in the coming months. Bharat Chhajer, former Chairman of PDEXCIL, notes improved demand scenario has not only boosted the purchasing capacity of traders but also attracted new investments in the state. "We are seeing a renewed interest in Gujarat's textile sector," he says. "The stable prices and strong demand are creating a conducive environment for growth, and I am confident that Gujarat's textile industry will continue to thrive in the future."
The revival of Gujarat's textile industry is a welcome sign for the state's economy. The textile sector is a major contributor to Gujarat's GDP, employing millions of people and providing crucial livelihood opportunities. The recent upswing offers hope for continued economic growth and stability in the region.
