ILO advocates decent work standards in India's cotton supply chain

The RISE for Impact project is spearheading a transformative initiative to promote decent work practices within the cotton supply chain. In response to a request from a prominent textile brand, the project is engaging with global suppliers to address critical decent work deficits. A recent session, attended by over 60 suppliers, highlighted the important role of brands in proactively ensuring social compliance throughout their supply chain, beginning with the farmers.
To increase its impact, the project has forged a strategic partnership with the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and its subsidiary, Cotton Development and Research Association (CDRA). This collaboration has enabled the organization of two farmer meets over a two-month period. In October and November, International Labour Organization (ILO) trained trainers from CITI-CDRI conducted awareness sessions on safety and health for cotton farmers in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
A significant milestone was achieved in November with a fireside chat on decent work and sustainable cotton supply chains. The event, held during the organic cotton accelerator’s sector-level event, brought together a diverse group of national and international stakeholders, including representatives from the Indian government, brands, retailers, farm groups, suppliers, industry associations, and civil society organizations. This dialogue underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in driving positive change within the industry.
