India launches dedicated outreach program in 40 countries to reduce tariff impact
To reduce the impact of the steep 50 per cent US tariff recently, India is launching a dedicated outreach program in 40 key textile-importing countries. The initiative will include countries like the UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Canada. The tariff in effect from August 27, 2025, is expected to impact India’s exports worth over $48 billion, with major fallout textiles, leather footwear and machinery sectors.
India currently exports textiles to over 220 countries with these top 40 importers being critical for diversification. They account for more than $590 billion in global imports. India's current share of the world textile trade is just 4.1 per cent, which leaves substantial room for growth.
As per the Commerce Ministry, the government plans to pursue a targeted approach in each of these 40 markets, positioning India as a reliable supplier of quality, sustainable, and innovative textile products. These efforts will be spearheaded by Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and Indian missions abroad, as per the official.
Instrumental in India’s push towards diversifications, these EPCs will focus on market mapping, identifying high-demand products, and connecting key production centers like Surat, Panipat, Tiruppur, and Bhadohi to new international markets. They will also provide guidance to exporters on leveraging free trade agreements, meeting sustainability standards, and obtaining necessary certifications.
