India’s polyester hubs find ways to tackle global energy shocks

The dynamics of India’s synthetic textile corridor are under pressure as Gulf-led energy volatility forces a recalibration of input costs. On March 1, 2026, the domestic polyester value chain witnessed a coordinated price revision, with Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) increasing by Rs 2 per kg and polyester melt rising by Rs 1.5 per kg. This movement is a direct response to Brent crude breaching the $81 per barrel threshold, following logistical disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that have heightened insurance premiums and freight risks for Middle Eastern feedstock.

 

For Indian spinning mills, this inflationary trend coincides with a recovery phase. Despite a 31.4 per cent dip in US exports during late 2025, the industry is relying on a $157 billion domestic consumption base to maintain production momentum. Forward-thinking manufacturers are reducing these shocks by diversifying into high-performance segments. A notable case is the shift toward ‘smart’ functional yarns, which now command a 25 per cent premium in the athleisure market, providing a necessary margin buffer against rising petrochemical costs. We are moving from a volume-based model to a risk-resilient framework, noted a commercial director at a major Surat filament hub. As India targets a $350 billion textile market by 2030, the integration of captive renewable energy and advanced MMF capacity remains the primary defense against the inherent cyclicality of global crude prices.
