India’s textile sector focuses on growth as 96 companies secure PLI support

The government has finalized 96 companies under the third round of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for textiles, marking an effort to strengthen the domestic manufacturing sector. By inducting 22 new applicants into this phase, the government has successfully mobilized a total committed investment of Rs 12,822.67 crore. This capital infusion is earmarked specifically for the man-made fiber (MMF) apparel, MMF fabrics, and technical textiles segments, which are increasingly vital to India's export ambitions.

Stakeholders opine, the initiative is designed to shift the sector from traditional cotton-heavy exports toward higher-value, specialized categories. With a projected cumulative turnover of Rs 58,294.18 crore across these projects, the program is expected to generate over 36,000 jobs. This increase is a calculated move to establish India as a global manufacturing hub in sunrise sectors, moving beyond conventional textile outputs to address the growing international demand for advanced performance fabrics, stated a sector analyst.

By prioritizing capacity building in these niche areas, the government aims to enhance the overall competitiveness of the textile value chain, effectively reducing dependence on high-end textile imports while fostering a robust ecosystem for value-added garment manufacturing.

The Ministry of Textiles oversees the regulatory framework and promotional policies for India’s textile and apparel industry. It focuses on driving investments in man-made fibres and technical textiles to enhance global export share, support domestic infrastructure, and create large-scale employment through schemes like the PLI and PM MITRA parks.
