ITMF Report: Global textile industry expands capacity, shifts towards synthetics

International Textile Manufacturer Federation (ITMF) has released its annual International Textile Industry Statistics (ITIS) report, revealing a shift in global textile industry trends. While total raw material consumption in the short-staple organised sector dipped slightly in 2023, capacity building is on the rise, with a focus on Asia.
The global textile industry saw a significant expansion in 2023, with a notable increase in installed short-staple spindles and open-end rotors. Air-jet spindle use surged, particularly outside of Asia, driven by growth in Turkiye. The number of shuttle-less looms also rose to 1.7 million units. While raw cotton and cellulosic fiber consumption declined, synthetic fiber usage slightly increased.
This report highlights a growing textile industry capacity, particularly in Asia, with a focus on modern technologies like air-jet spindles and shuttle-less looms. While raw material consumption shows a slight decline, the shift towards synthetic fibers suggests a potential change in industry practices.
