J&K wool producers need to capitalize on their potential to boost India's textile sector

Romesh Khajuria, Chairman of the Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) and Jammu Kashmir Wool Development and Marketing Association (JKWDMA), has urged J&K’s wool producers to capitalize on their potential to contribute significantly to India’s textile industry.
During an interaction with representatives of wool producer Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Kissan Ghar, Khajuria emphasized the region’s capacity to produce high-quality wool. He highlighted the importance of effectively implementing the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) to maximize benefits for wool-producing farmers.
Khajuria further suggested that the Jammu and Kashmir government should establish a robust mechanism for purchasing wool directly from farmers and FPOs. This initiative, he believes, would empower producers and stimulate the local economy.
The exposure tour to Panipat, organized by the Sheep Husbandry Department Kashmir under HADP and coordinated by WWEPC, provided an opportunity for FPO representatives to gain insights into the wool manufacturing industry. Participants included Firdos from Pulwama, Lyaqat from Bandipora, Wani from Kulgam, and others. By leveraging the potential of its wool resources and implementing supportive policies, Jammu and Kashmir can position itself as a major player in India’s textile sector.
