Kasturi Cotton capitalizes on western sustainable apparel mandates with blockchain traceability
...India’s natural fiber sector is realigning its supply chain to meet stringent Western environmental regulations, riding on the Kasturi Cotton Bharat standard to secure premium global export valuation. As the European Union legislation including mandatory Digital Product Passports and Extended Producer Responsibility mandates threatens to disqualify non-traceable fiber imports, the national branding initiative provides farm-to-fabric verifiable sustainability.
Built on three core pillars of standardized quality specifications, digital farm-level tracking through the KCTrack blockchain portal, and unified certification protocols, the framework addresses long-standing challenges surrounding contamination and origin authenticity. Dual-certification partnerships with global bodies such as Better Cotton and Regenagri allow compliant Indian fiber to command a quality premium while satisfying ESG sourcing criteria for international retail brands.
Operationally, over 340 modernized ginning and pressing facilities have integrated QR-code verification protocols to maintain strict purity thresholds, keeping trash content below 2 per cent, a significant reduction compared to standard commercial yields. Standardized quality combined with transparent farm-level traceability via blockchain enables Indian cotton to transition from a generic commodity into a certified sustainable asset for global apparel manufacturers, says Jayesh Kakkad, Deputy Director-Marketing, Texprocil.
While high initial compliance costs for smallholder farmers and volatile global raw material demand pose ongoing friction points, domestic spinning mills and export-oriented garment manufacturers are adopting traceable yarn lots to secure multi-year supply contracts with eco-conscious Western buyers.
Kasturi Cotton Bharat is a premium national brand initiative launched jointly by the Ministry of Textiles, the Cotton Corporation of India, and TEXPROCIL. The program provides certified, low-trash, long-staple cotton and fully traceable yarn to domestic spinning and global apparel markets. Managed under a Rs 30-crore public-private funding model established in late 2022, it targets rapid adoption across major textile hubs to drive high-value export revenues.
