Leaders urge Puducherry governor to back textile park under PM MITRA

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has asked Puducherry Lt Governor K Kailashnathan to support the setting up of a textile park in the union territory under the PM MITRA scheme. A CPI delegation led by State Secretary AM Saleem submitted a memorandum emphasizing the region’s rich textile history and potential for revival.

Puducherry, once home to renowned mills like Anglo French Textiles (AFT) and Swadeshi Cotton Mills, has seen a decline in its textile sector. They argued with proper backing, the industry could regain its former strength, contributing to local socioeconomic development.

The memorandum highlighted Puducherry’s eligibility for the PM MITRA scheme, proposing an integrated textile value chain at a single location. It also suggested potential growth in fashion tourism.

They said K Subbarayan, MP and AITUC national vice president, had met the Textile Secretary, who expressed willingness to consider a proposal for the textile park. Despite prior announcement by the Puducherry Industries Minister, no significant progress has been made.
