Lyocell emerges as primary sustainability driver at Fibers & Yarns 2026

The Fiber & Yarns 2026 exhibition in Mumbai showcased a decisive shift in the textile value chain, with Lyocell emerging as the primary catalyst for high-performance sustainable apparel. Q1, FY26 data indicates 14 per cent increase in specialized yarn imports, driven by domestic manufacturers shifting away from traditional viscose toward closed-loop cellulosic fibers. Analysts at the summit highlighted, Lyocell is no longer a niche premium offering but a core component for denim and activewear, where its moisture-management properties outperform standard synthetics. A recent case study of a Tirupur-based exporter showed, switching to Lyocell-rich blends reduced water consumption by 30 per cent while increasing per-garment margins by 12 per cent due to European demand for circular materials.

Despite these gains, the industry faces price volatility in wood pulp and logistical bottlenecks in chemical recovery infrastructure. Elena Rossi, Global Textile Strategist notes the challenge lies in scaling production fast enough to meet the 20 per cent projected growth in eco-conscious fiber demand by year-end. This shift positions the Indian textile sector to capture a larger share of the $250 billion global sustainable apparel market, provided local spinning mills can successfully integrate these high-tenacity yarns into existing high-speed production lines.

The Fibers & Yarns exhibition is India’s premier sourcing platform for the textile industry, connecting global fiber manufacturers with weavers and knitters. Historically a hub for conventional cotton, it now focuses on specialty man-made fibers and technical textiles. The event supports a $150 billion domestic market aiming for rapid export expansion.
