Upstream raw silk production in India is moving towards organized decentralized processing, with growing regional demand for wild silk fabrics. To capture higher value at source, the Directorate of Sericulture under the Department of Cooperation, Marketing and Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, has signed a non-financial MoU with the BAIF Development Research Foundation to execute a dedicated Tasar Silk Development Project in Gadchiroli. Private nutrition major Herbalife has joined the initiative as a corporate partner to fund cocoon rearing assets and motorized reeling machinery.
The enterprise directly targets 2,270 scheduled tribe families and local women's self-help groups across eastern Vidarbha. While eastern Vidarbha holds over 44,500 acre of natural forest host trees, traditional harvesters are restricted to selling raw, unprocessed cocoons at depressed spot rates. The agreement addresses this supply chain bottleneck by establishing private grainages for silkworm egg production, commercial cocoon production hubs, and post-cocoon processing facilities within tribal clusters.
By shifting primary silk reeling, spinning, and yarn processing closer to forest sites, raw cocoon realizations are expected to grow significantly. Moving from raw cocoon sales to decentralized silk yarn production establishes a localized value-addition framework that protects tribal artisans from middleman margins, states Dr Bharat Kakade, President and Managing Trustee, BAIF Development Research Foundation. Scaling localized reeling infrastructure establishes a direct industrial bridge between forest-dwelling rearers and commercial handloom or powerloom weaving clusters across western and central India.
