Make the Label Count gains ICA support for EU labeling

The International Cotton Association (ICA) has joined the Make the Label Count (MTLC) coalition, aiming to reform the European Union's (EU) Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) approach. The current PEF rules risk oversimplifying sustainability claims and favoring synthetic fibers over natural ones, such as cotton.
These rules are being used as the basis for draft EU legislation, which fails to consider the full environmental impact of fossil-fuel fibers, including plastic waste, microplastics, and their negative impact on the environment. In contrast, natural fibers like cotton are biodegradable, recyclable, and renewable, offering significant environmental benefits.
ICA president Kim Hanna stressed the significance of providing consumers with accurate and balanced sustainability labels. She emphasized that both ICA and ICA Bremen are dedicated to ensuring that consumers have access to reliable information.
The MTLC coalition, representing natural fibers, is urging the European Commission to implement effective legislation that addresses textile pollution at its source. Dalena White, Spokesperson for MTLC, expressed gratitude for the support of their cotton colleagues in this vital global coalition. She emphasized that by establishing a level playing field for all fibers, they can safeguard the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
