NHDC promotes natural dyes for handloom weavers

The National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) is taking significant strides to promote the use of natural dyes among handloom weavers across India. As managing director Rita Prem Hemrajani says, the NHDC is conducting workshops and providing incentives to encourage weavers to adopt sustainable dyeing practices.
In fiscal year 2022-2023, the NHDC supplied yarn, dyes, and chemicals worth Rs 1,150 crores to nearly five lakh weavers, mostly individual artisans. This year, the corporation aims to increase this figure to Rs 1,200 crores. To facilitate the use of natural dyes, the NHDC has partnered textile mills in Coimbatore and Salem to produce yarn dyed with natural pigments. The corporation is also actively seeking additional suppliers to meet the growing demand for high-count natural dye yarn, particularly in regions like Odisha and West Bengal.
By promoting natural dyes, the NHDC is not only supporting sustainable practices but also enhancing the quality and appeal of handloom products. The initiative aligns with the broader goal of preserving India's rich textile heritage and empowering its weavers.
