The Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) has received Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification for its proprietary Clocell Milkweed Fiber. Valid until June 30, 2027, this certification for raw white and natural fiber forms confirms compliance with rigorous international human ecological safety requirements. Specifically, the material attained Product Class I status, the most stringent category under the framework, rendering it suitable for infant and sensitive-skin applications.
This regulatory milestone comes as the industry aggressively seeks bio-based alternatives to traditional synthetic and water-intensive natural fibers. A perennial crop, Milkweed, offers numerous operational advantages, including high moisture regain and a yield per acre approximately double that of cotton. Beyond sustainability, the fiber’s hollow structure provides superior thermal insulation, making it a compelling candidate for high-performance apparel and technical textiles.
NITRA is currently scaling the supply chain through collaborative agricultural initiatives across Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. By integrating these crops into regional textile production, the institution aims to mitigate the volatility often associated with commodity-driven supply chains. As global brands prioritize supply chain transparency and non-toxic material sourcing, this certification positions Clocell as a viable, sustainable component for the next generation of eco-conscious global apparel and home textile markets.
Established in 1974, the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) serves as a premier research and development institution focused on textile innovation, testing, and certification. It supports the industry through skill development and technology transfer. With a strong emphasis on technical textiles and sustainable fiber development, NITRA maintains a robust financial and operational outlook, consistently driving India's position as a hub for advanced material science in the global textile landscape.
