Odisha to bridge cotton cultivation-capacity gap with a new yarn facility

The Odisha State Level Single Window Clearance Authority aims to bridge the long-standing gap between the state’s cotton cultivation and its nascent spinning capacity by setting up a specialized cotton yarn manufacturing facility with an investment of Rs 154.89 crore. Designed to process locally sourced lint into high-quality combed and carded yarn, the project supports the state’s ambition to retain value within its borders by integrating advanced ring-spinning technology. Analysts point out Odisha produces nearly 5 lakh bales of cotton annually with a substantial portion traditionally exported to other states for processing.
This new unit serves as a critical intervention to rectify that imbalance. Senior commerce officials say, the facility is a commitment to building a resilient textile ecosystem that minimizes logistics overheads and strengthens the supply of raw materials for downstream apparel units. This investment comes at a time when global sourcing hubs are demanding tighter vertical integration to ensure traceability and speed-to-market. The project is expected to generate approximately 500 direct jobs, offering a tangible economic uplift while positioning Odisha as a competitive destination for large-scale garment exporters looking for localized yarn security.
