A growing industrial dispute has emerged across Coimbatore and Tiruppur, where powerloom unit owners report, manufacturers are unilaterally reducing weaving charges by 25 to 50 paise per meter. This move overtly breaches the comprehensive wage agreement reached in 2025, leading to widespread protests and formal petitions to district administrative authorities. The dispute underscores a fragile equilibrium in the regional textile supply chain, where manufacturing units are attempting to insulate themselves from fluctuating raw material overheads by squeezing conversion margins.

Analysts say, this trend signals a broader breakdown in contractual compliance within the decentralized textile ecosystem. When manufacturers offload their rising input costs onto the conversion segment, it threatens the viability of the entire powerloom infrastructure, observes S Arumugam, Regional Textile Consultant.

In one notable case, a cluster of units in the Palladam belt reported 15 per cent reduction in operational capacity following the sudden wage cuts, directly impacting fabric output for the domestic garment trade. With weaving units operating on razor-thin margins the current standoff risks labor unrest and prolonged production downtime. Stakeholders are now urging government intervention to enforce existing wage protocols and stabilize the fabric procurement process to prevent a wider cessation of operations across the textile belt.

Coimbatore and Tiruppur remain the backbone of India’s grey fabric and knitwear production, housing thousands of powerloom units. These clusters serve national and international apparel brands, focusing on cotton and blended fabrics. Future growth hinges on modernizing machinery and strengthening collective bargaining to ensure sustainable pricing across the value chain.
