Rahul Gandhi discusses industry challenges with silk weavers of Bhagalpur
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition (LoP), recently met silk weavers in Bhagalpur, Bihar, to discuss the significant challenges facing the region's silk industry. The weavers briefed him on the current state of the weaving units operating in Bhagalpur. They emphasized, while Bhagalpuri silk continues to hold its own against competition from modern synthetic fabrics, handloom artisans require stronger government support and policy focus.
Widely known as the ‘Silk City of India,’ Bhagalpur is globally recognized for its unique Bhagalpuri or Tussar silk. This silk is derived from the cocoons of the Antheraea papia silkworm species. This centuries-old craft is a labor-intensive, eco-friendly process and is often called ‘peace silk’ because it is produced using cruelty-free methods. The thriving silk ecosystem in Bhagalpur is deeply embedded in Bihar’s cultural heritage. It's also a major contributor to the state’s economy, attracting strong demand from both domestic and international consumers.
