India's Textile Ministry is set to introduce a revamped national program for handloom weavers post FY26. With a strong focus on boosting marketing and exports, particularly through digital strategies and sustainability, this new initiative aims to modernize how handloom products reach consumers and international markets.

Currently, the government relies on traditional channels like melas and exhibitions for sales. However, a shift is underway with the development of indiahandmade.com, a dedicated portal created in collaboration with the Digital India scheme. This platform offers a crucial advantage by providing commission-free listings and covering shipping costs from the National Handloom Development Fund, a direct benefit compared to high commissions on other e-commerce sites. So far, 2,362 sellers and 15,257 product profiles are registered.

To ensure authenticity, the ministry has introduced the 'Handloom Mark' certification for genuinely hand-woven products and the 'India Handloom Brand' for products with higher yarn count.

Active since 2021-22, the current national program provides financial aid for raw materials, upgraded looms, infrastructure, marketing, concessional loans (MUDRA scheme), and social security for the estimated 3.5 million weavers. Key benefits include a 15 per cent price subsidy on yarn costs, a Rs 8,000 monthly pension for awardee weavers over 60, and scholarships up to Rs 2 lakh annually for weavers' children pursuing textile-related courses.

In 2024-25, India’s handloom exports reached Rs 1,178 crore. Furthermore, 106 handloom products have received GI (Geographical Indication) tags, with 21 more applications pending. On August 7, 2025, the government plans to honor 24 handloom weavers with Sant Kabir Awards and National Handloom Awards, recognizing their contributions to this vital sector.
