Union government to help weavers expand market reach
The Central government, in collaboration with state governments, is committed to improving the living standards and economic conditions of weavers across India. Union textiles minister Giriraj Singh, after a review meeting with Andhra Pradesh officials, emphasized the need to expand market networks for weavers' products and ensure competitive pricing.
Singh also stressed the importance of addressing the healthcare and education needs of the weaving community. He highlighted the need to protect the handloom sector from the competition of powerlooms.
Andhra Pradesh Textiles Minister S Savitha briefed the Union Minister on various initiatives to boost production, improve jute products, and enhance cotton yield and storage. She also sought central approval for establishing small textile clusters in key regions and for constructing individual looms and workshops.
Additionally, Savitha proposed the establishment of a Handloom and Handicrafts Museum and the development of mega handloom clusters and a mega textiles park under the PM-MITRA scheme. These initiatives aim to revitalize the textile industry and empower weavers.
