West Asia geopolitical volatility affects Maharashtra textile clusters

The textile value chain across Maharashtra is facing a critical liquidity squeeze, with data from the State Textile Corporation confirming a loss of Rs 4,000 crore in March 2026. This downturn is primarily due to the escalating West Asia conflict, which has effectively paralyzed export channels and destabilized the regional supply of essential fibers. In hubs like Bhiwandi, Malegaon, and Ichalkaranji, which house approximately 39 per cent of India’s power looms, operational capacity has declined massively. To manage rising input costs and overheads, manufacturers have moved to a mandatory three-day weekly shutdown.

While the government recently approved 52 new applications under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Round III to boost man-made fiber (MMF) and technical textiles, the immediate reality for local weavers is one of survival.Logistics costs have increased nearly 400 per cent, and the price of synthetic yarn components has risen 20 per cent.This creates a severe disadvantage compared to competitors in Bangladesh and Vietnam who benefit from shorter lead times.

Rais Shaikh, Industry Representative, warns, without an immediate state-sponsored financial package, the sector faces the risk of a reverse migration of skilled labor, reminiscent of the 2020 pandemic disruptions. Current strategic efforts now focus on diversifying export destinations through new Free Trade Agreements to mitigate dependence on volatile Gulf transit routes.

The Maharashtra textile sector serves as the state’s second-largest employer, managing over 9.48 lakh power looms and 4,000 handlooms. Focusing on cotton and synthetic yarn processing, the industry is currently transitioning toward technical textiles and ESG-compliant manufacturing to align with the 2030 national export target of $100 billion despite current fiscal headwinds.
