The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has released its state-wise estimates of daily cotton arrivals for Friday, 10 January 2025. The total arrivals across India stood at 1,90,900 bales (170 kg each), amounting to 32,453 metric tonnes. Maharashtra reported the highest daily arrival of 66,000 bales (11,220 metric tonnes), followed by Telangana at 37,000 bales (6,290 metric tonnes), and Gujarat at 31,000 bales (5,270 metric tonnes).

The rise in international demand over recent months has revitalized garment production and investment in Tiruppur, leading to a boost in yarn demand from local textile mills. KM Subramanian, President, Tiruppur Exporters Association, stated retail buyers sourcing garments from Bangladesh are now looking into Tiruppur as a potential supplier, with audits already underway in some units.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has procured approximately 46 per cent of the total market arrivals of raw cotton for the 2024-25 marketing season. Latest data shows, CCI has purchased over 63 lakh bales, close to half of the estimated 136 lakh bales arriving in the market. Regional procurement has been notable in Telangana, with 32 lakh bales procured, followed by 16 lakh bales in Maharashtra. Other states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh have also contributed to the procurement figures.

Brazil has surpassed the US as the world's leading cotton exporter in 2024, ending the US's decades-long dominance. This shift is due to an increase in Brazilian production because of increased acreage, technological advancements, and high-quality output. Despite a slight dip in productivity, Brazil's 2023-24 cotton output reached a record 3.7 million tons, a 16.64 per cent increase year-on-year. While domestic demand has grown modestly, rising international prices have supported local cotton prices, encouraging further expansion.

The 23rd Dhaka International Yarn and Fabric Show 2025 (Winter Edition) will take place from January 15 to 18 at the International Convention City Bashundhara, Dhaka. The event is a premier platform for the textile and garment industry in Bangladesh and South Asia. Jointly organised by CEMS-Global USA and the Sub-Council of Textile Industry of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT TEX), the four-day exhibition will feature over 325 exhibitors from more than 15 countries, showcasing products such as yarn, fabrics, trims, and accessories.

Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh, inaugurated the new permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Fulia, West Bengal. Built at a cost of Rs 75.95 crores on 5.38 acres, the campus features smart classrooms, a digital library, modern testing labs, and other cutting-edge infrastructure. The institute aims to serve as a Centre of Excellence in handloom and textile technology, benefiting students from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sikkim.

In Texas, where cotton is a cornerstone of agriculture with over seven million acres under cultivation, efforts are underway to restore its prominence. Agriculture leaders emphasize the crop's significance to the state’s economy and heritage. The rise of fast fashion has driven demand for cheap synthetic fabrics like polyester, but environmental concerns are steering consumers back to natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and mohair. Synthetic fabrics shed microplastics during washing, polluting waterways and taking centuries to decompose. In contrast, cotton is biodegradable, breaking down within months.

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a new textile policy to stimulate the state’s economy by attracting investments worth Rs 10,000 crore to the textile sector. The state, which is the sixth-largest cotton producer in India, is poised to leverage its abundant raw materials to enhance value-added textile production. In 2022-23, AP produced 15.41 lakh bales of cotton, and the sector already hosts around 106 spinning mills and 12,635 power loom units.
