Mandatory Specifications for Viscose Staple Fiber (VSF) as per Bureau of Indian Standards
IS 17266:2019 is an Indian standard that specifies the requirements for viscose staple fibres (VSF). It was published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 2019 and has been mandatory for all imported VSF since March 29, 2023.
The standard covers a wide range of properties that include:
- Physical properties such as moisture regain, ash content, pH, tensile strength, elongation, and degree of polymerization
- Chemical properties such as acid insoluble matter
- Tolerances levels for these properties
- Packing and labelling requirements

The purpose of the standard is to ensure that VSF used in India is of good quality and meets the needs of the Indian textile industry. Compliance with the standard is mandatory for all imported VSF and is also recommended for domestically produced VSF.
Additional Specifications
- The staple length of the VSF should be declared by the manufacturer and maintained within a tolerance of ±10%
- The VSF should be free from visible foreign matter and harmful substances
- The VSF should be packed and labelled as per IS 13977
