Bizpando AG, in partnership with the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) and the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), has launched a project to promote carbon credits in cotton production. The initiative aims to support African smallholder farmers with sustainable farming techniques and digital solutions to improve soil health, sequester carbon dioxide, and generate additional income.

Using methods such as biochar application, minimal tillage, and cover cropping, farmers can sequester up to 5.75 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare annually. This approach enhances soil fertility, reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides, and increases crop yields. Farmers producing cotton under the Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) standard will gain extra income from selling carbon credits.

Bizpando is developing a GPS-supported system to map cotton farms, ensuring accurate tracking of carbon sequestration. The platform will also verify cotton production data, issue carbon credit certificates, and facilitate direct payments to farmers. The first credits are expected by 2026.

“Our project merges digital innovation with sustainability to benefit smallholder farmers,” said Jasper Bhaumick, CEO of Bizpando AG. The initiative strengthens climate-smart agriculture while offering economic opportunities to African cotton growers.
