Bangladesh: Tangail Cotton Mills closure leaves thousands jobless

The Tangail Cotton Mill, once a thriving industrial hub in Bangladesh, now stands as a haunting reminder of past glory. This state-owned yarn production facility, closed for 16 years due to mismanagement and debt, has fallen into disrepair.
The mill, spread across 26.285 acres, once employed thousands of workers. Its closure has left them jobless and struggling to make ends meet. Valuable machinery, worth hundreds of crores of taka, is deteriorating, and the land is being illegally occupied. Despite government plans to revive the mill through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, bureaucratic hurdles have stalled the process. Local residents and former employees express frustration over the government's inaction, fearing that the mill's historical significance and potential economic value are being squandered.
Unless urgent steps are taken to restore the mill, it risks becoming a permanent scar on the region's industrial landscape.
