Brazil's Cotton Boom: Poised to dethrone the US as No. 1 exporter
Brazil is pushing hard to dethrone the US as the world's top exporter. With a bulging surplus and the US struggling, Brazil's cotton is on fire, setting the stage for a record-breaking season that could redraw the global map. As per Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (CEPEA), with a huge surplus and dropping US supply, Brazil is ready to for a record-breaking season that could rewrite the global cotton trade landscape.
With a massive pile of cotton and soybean delays opened up more land, boosting production to near-record levels. Add in existing stocks and imports, and you get a cotton mountain of 5.2 million tons by 2024, according to Brazil's CONAB.
Brazilians are using more cotton too, hitting a 10-year high. But the real story is exports. The USDA predicts a staggering 2.5 million tons shipped out in 2024, a 73 per cent jump and just a hair shy of the US total. This could briefly hand Brazil the exporter crown, depending on monthly shipments.
But it's not all sunshine and cotton fields. Brazil's productivity dipped a bit, and volatile markets could throw curveballs. But there's a bright side: Brazil's "Better Cotton" is the world's biggest, adding sustainability and market muscle.
Indeed, Brazil's cotton is on a roll, threatening to rewrite the global trade story. With a massive surplus, booming exports, and a focus on sustainability, Brazil is a force to be reckoned with in the cotton world. Buckle up, because the cotton crown might just be changing hands.
