CCI assures farmers about cotton procurement amid MSP support
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has urged farmers not to resort to distress sales, assuring them that they will purchase all cotton brought to designated yards, even as prices hover around the Minimum Support Price (MSP) levels. The CCI has been handling around 80 per cent of purchases, with traders buying smaller quantities. For example, while traders bought 630 quintals, the CCI procured 6,837 quintals at the Warangal Market Yard.
CCI has procured 86 lakh bales this season, a significant increase from last season’s 32.84 lakh bales. The MSP for seed cotton was raised by 7.5 per cent, contributing to the increased procurement. Despite fluctuations in prices, the CCI reassured farmers that it would continue its purchases until March 15, as long as cotton is offered at MSP levels.
CCI chairman K Gupta emphasized that procurement operations will continue despite minor disruptions, such as temporary suspensions in some areas like Maharashtra. These were brief and due to high arrivals, expected to be resolved by the week’s end. With all centres operating smoothly, CCI remains committed to supporting cotton farmers nationwide through continuous procurement.
