Cellulose Fibres Conference 2025 in Germany highlights boom in sustainable fibre innovations

The Cellulose Fibres Conference 2025, held on March 12 and 13 in Cologne, Germany, attracted industry leaders to explore innovations in sustainable fibre technologies for textiles, hygiene, and packaging. The event underscored the shift from fossil-based to cellulose-based fibres, highlighting wood pulp, agricultural waste, and recycled textiles as emerging raw materials.
Debuting this year, biosynthetics gained strong attention for their biodegradability and potential to replace fossil-based synthetics. Discussions focused on fibre-to-fibre recycling, marine biodegradability, and circular economy strategies. Notably, Lyocell production is driving global investment, with 200,000 tonnes of new capacity added annually and an expected 17 per cent growth between 2024 and 2029.
The highlight was the ‘Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year 2025’ award. Winners included Germany’s SA-Dynamics for cellulose aerogel insulation textiles, France’s Releaf Paper for urban leaf-based packaging fibres, and Australia’s Uluu for seaweed-based biosynthetic alternatives to polyester.
Industry voices from Birla Cellulose, Ikea, and CIRFS called for standardisation and increased adoption of cellulose fibres to meet sustainability goals. With over 50 business meetings and vibrant social events, the conference cemented its role as a hub for sustainable fibre innovation and collaboration across the value chain.
