Climate change devastates cotton farmers in Gujarat, Maharashtra: Report

A new report reveals the devastating impact of climate change on India's cotton farmers. Over half of those surveyed in Gujarat and Maharashtra have experienced major or complete crop losses due to floods and droughts in recent years. Extreme heat, longer dry spells, and unpredictable rainfall patterns have made it increasingly difficult for smallholder farmers to sustain their livelihoods.
The study, conducted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and the All-India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), highlights the urgent need for support. While some government programs and insurance schemes exist, they are often insufficient or poorly known.
Big fashion brands, which rely heavily on Indian cotton, have a responsibility to help their suppliers adapt to climate change. Supporting farmers not only aligns with ethical principles but also ensures a stable supply of raw materials.
As climate shocks become more frequent and severe, it is imperative to invest in sustainable farming practices, improve access to insurance, and provide targeted support to vulnerable communities. The future of India's cotton industry, and the livelihoods of millions of farmers, depends on it.
