Egyptian cotton targets booming Bangladesh textile industry
The Cotton Egypt Association (CEA), a non-profit promoting Egyptian cotton, plans to expand into Bangladesh's thriving textile market. Established in 2005, CEA works to ensure the authenticity of Egyptian Cotton throughout the supply chain. Recognizing Bangladesh's position as a global textile leader, CEA's executive director Khaled Schuman, sees an opportunity for "a future woven with innovation and sustainability." Bangladesh's skilled workforce and manufacturing prowess have made it a textile and apparel powerhouse.
CEA partners Bureau Veritas to verify Egyptian Cotton using DNA testing and audits. This combats fake Egyptian cotton and ensures transparency in the supply chain. Manufacturers can use the Egyptian Cotton logo to guarantee their products are made from 100 per cent authentic cotton. Leading retailers worldwide require this accreditation.
Egyptian Cotton is renowned for its superior quality, softness, strength, and durability. A US consumer study by CEA and PBM found that 89 per cent perceived it as the highest quality cotton, with 61 per cent willing to pay more for it.
Sustainability is also a priority for CEA. They collaborate with the Better Cotton Program in Egypt and promote sustainable practices throughout the cotton lifecycle. They view sustainability as essential to meet the demands of eco-conscious retailers and protect the environment.
