German textiles manufacturer Gebruder Otto is committed to achieving carbon neutrality through sustainable practices and short supply chains. The company has developed a new yarn made from a blend of hemp and organic cotton, utilizing locally sourced German winter hemp that requires significantly less water than cotton. Hemp cotton is a sustainable fabric that is gaining popularity in the fashion industry. Its standout feature lies in the unique combination of hemp and cotton fibers during the production process. It is created by blending these two types of fibers, harnessing the best qualities of each to produce a versatile and environmentally friendly fabric. With sustainability and comfort, hemp cotton is not only suitable for clothing production but also finds extensive applications in interior decoration and various fashion products. This combination not only minimizes environmental impact but also delivers diverse and high-quality products for consumers.

Andreas Merkel, Managing Director of the family-owned business, emphasizes sustainability is a long-term commitment, not just a goal. Otto has expanded its solar power system, generating 930,000 kw-hour annually, and utilizes hydropower to minimize carbon dioxide emissions.

By sourcing cotton from Spain and Israel, Gebruder Otto ensures compliance with the Supply Chain Act while enhancing transparency and flexibility. Their innovative 'cottonisation' process allows them to blend 25 per cent hemp with 75 per cent organic cotton, leading to increased interest from various textile sectors.

Founded in 1901, the company, based in Dietenheim, is renowned for its high-quality yarns and is an industry leader with around 160 employees, generating approximately €30 million in sales in 2023.
