Gujarat emerges as India’s cotton powerhouse

Gujarat, known for its vibrant culture and diverse industries, has also emerged as a cotton powerhouse. Over the past few decades, the state has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its cotton cultivation landscape.
The state's cotton production journey began with a productivity rate of just 139 kg per hectare in 1960. However, through continuous research and development, Gujarat has managed to increase this figure to approximately 600 kg per hectare today. A key milestone in this journey was the development of the hybrid-4 cotton variety in Surat in 1971. This breakthrough led to a nationwide cotton production boom and helped India become self-sufficient in cotton.
Today, Gujarat's cotton cultivation area spans 26.8 lakh hectares, producing 92 lakh bales at a productivity rate of 589 kg per hectare. The state's cotton industry plays a vital role in its economy, providing employment opportunities to millions of people.
The state government has been instrumental in supporting the growth of the cotton sector through various initiatives, including research and development, farmer training, and market promotion. As Gujarat continues to invest in cotton cultivation, it is poised to become a global leader in the production of this valuable commodity.
