Higher cotton yield can solve 80% of industry problems
The 6th All-India Cotton Conference concluded with a panel discussion on the critical role of ginning in addressing challenges posed by the rising minimum support price (MSP) for cotton. Experts from across India gathered to discuss strategies for boosting cotton yield and advocating for policy changes.
A consensus emerged that while the MSP is inevitable, increasing yield is crucial to mitigate its impact. Panelists emphasized the need for advanced seed technology, currently restricted due to a ban on genetically modified (GM) seeds. They urged the government to reconsider this policy to accelerate yield improvement.
The importance of QR code traceability for cotton was highlighted as a tool for data collection and transparency. Industry leaders believe this system can provide valuable insights into production, consumption, and trade patterns.
Additionally, the removal of import duty on cotton was identified as a key demand to enhance the competitiveness of the Indian textile industry and support the government's goal of doubling textile exports. Overall, the conference underscored the complex challenges facing the cotton sector and the need for collaborative efforts to address them.
