Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles & Apparel (HKRITA) has unveiled a 20,000 sq ft Open Lab dedicated to sustainable textile innovation. The lab aims to revolutionize the textile industry by showcasing cutting-edge solutions, fostering collaboration, and optimizing resources.

One of the lab's pioneering projects, ‘Farm-to-Garment,’ introduces a location-independent production line. By employing soilless hydroponic techniques, this system reduces water consumption by up to 90 per cent and enables year-round cultivation near urban areas, minimizing transportation emissions.

The lab also houses a pilot plant, featuring a smart garment sorting system for efficient recycling and the Green Machine 2.0, which separates mixed fibers. This technology, leveraging hydrothermal processes, can recover polyester fibers from blended materials like cotton-polyester, facilitating a circular textile economy.

By promoting sustainable practices and innovative solutions, HKRITA's Open Lab is poised to drive significant positive change in the textile industry.
