ICAC’s Private Sector Advisory Council urges for traceability, sustainability standards in cotton sector

The Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) held its Fifth Open Session, focusing on the critical issues of traceability and sustainability in the natural fiber industry.

Industry leaders from diverse sectors discussed the importance of establishing a common definition of traceability, developing a standardized bale ID system, and ensuring support for global implementation. They emphasized the need for collaboration between governments, brands, and industry stakeholders to drive progress in these areas.

Anees Khawaja of MG Apparel highlighted the unique advantages of cotton as a biodegradable and sustainable fiber, particularly in comparison to synthetic materials. Marc Lewkowitz of Supima underscored the importance of practical and consistent traceability solutions to meet the growing demand for sustainable products.

Eimear McDonagh of Agri Direct Australia stressed the need for a level playing field between natural and synthetic fibers and the importance of government support. Debra Guo of Textile Exchange introduced the concept of ‘preferred materials’ and the potential for transforming production systems to deliver greater benefits for the planet and its people.
