India’s cotton sowing area shrinks in India

India's cotton sowing area has significantly decreased this year compared to the previous season. As of August 22, the total area under cotton cultivation was recorded at 111.386 lakh hectares, down from 122.742 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

The decline in acreage is particularly pronounced in the northern states of Rajasthan and Punjab, which were severely affected by the Pink Bollworm pest last season. The infestation discouraged farmers from planting cotton this year, leading to a substantial reduction in sowing area.

Other major cotton-producing states, such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, also reported lower acreage. The overall decrease in sowing area is expected to have a significant impact on cotton production in India.

While the cotton sowing season is nearing its end, the shortfall in acreage is unlikely to be recovered. Over 90 percent of the total sowing has already been completed, leaving little room for expansion. The Ministry of Agriculture's weekly report indicates a 9 percent decrease in cotton sowing area across the country.
