India’s eri silk gets Oeko-Tex certification, increases global market prospects

The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has secured the prestigious Oeko-Tex certification from Germany for eri silk. This globally recognized certification ensures textiles are free from harmful substances, enhancing consumer confidence and boosting the international marketability of Indian eri silk.
Eri silk’s certification aligns with global sustainability trends, attracting environmentally conscious buyers and strengthening India’s position in high-end textile markets. It allows Indian exporters to compete in premium segments, ensuring compliance with international safety and quality standards.
The government has undertaken several initiatives to develop the eri silk industry. The Central Muga & Eri Research Institute in Assam focuses on R&D, training, and modernizing production techniques. The Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization supplies quality seeds, while the Silk Samagra-2 scheme (2021-26) supports the overall growth of sericulture, including eri silk.
Despite these efforts, the industry remains largely unorganized, relying on traditional methods. Modernization is needed to enhance efficiency, and greater awareness about global certifications is essential for wider acceptance. With Oeko-Tex certification, Indian eri silk gains a competitive edge, paving the way for increased exports and sustainable growth in the global textile industry.
