Kashmir to get modern yarn dyeing centre at IICT Nowshera

In a major boost to Kashmir’s handicrafts sector, the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir, is ready to commission a state-of-the-art Common Facility Centre (CFC) for yarn dyeing at the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Nowshera. Built at a cost of Rs 2.59 crore, the CFC will adhere to international standards, enhancing the quality and marketability of handcrafted products globally.
The facility will dye various raw materials, including silk, wool, cotton, and viscose, using 100 per cent Azo-free chemical dyes. Equipped with advanced machinery, including dyeing machines with capacities ranging from 5 to 20 kg, the CFC will also feature water softening system, dryers, hydro extractors, washing machines, two mini boilers, and an effluent treatment plant.
With a daily dyeing capacity of 250 kg for silk, wool, and cotton in hank form, the centre will also offer a natural dyeing facility for 7 kg of Pashmina using a Soft Flow Dyeing Machine.
The department has urged stakeholders to approach the Director of IICT to avail the facility at nominal rates, ensuring improved dyeing solutions for artisans and manufacturers.
