Keel Labs and Outerknown debut Kelsun

North Carolina-based startup Keel Labs and California-based eco-conscious brand Outerknown have teamed up to launch the first commercial product made with Kelsun, a seaweed-based fiber. This partnership marks a significant step forward in sustainable fashion, as both brands are dedicated to protecting the ocean and promoting responsible practices.
Outerknown, co-founded by pro surfer Kelly Slater and designer John Moore, has a reputation for creating stylish and sustainable clothing. Their popular Blanket Shirt, introduced in 2016, is known for its comfort and eco-friendliness. The new version, made from a blend of organic cotton and Kelsun yarn, maintains the original's beloved qualities while incorporating innovative, planet-friendly materials.
Kelsun, developed by Keel Labs, is a 100 per cent bio-based and biodegradable fiber. Made from over 75 per cent seaweed biopolymer, the material breaks down naturally in about 60 days, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional textile fibers. Keel Labs is committed to responsible seaweed sourcing, adhering to sustainability guidelines and local harvesting practices.
Tessa Callaghan, co-founder and CEO of Keel Labs, expressed her enthusiasm about working with Outerknown, noting their shared passion for the ocean and their commitment to creating environmentally friendly products. This collaboration brings Keel Labs' mission to life, as they continue to develop innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.
