Lindstrom India steps up sustainability with recycled polyester.
Lindstrom India, a global textile rental leader, is weaving sustainability into its workwear line by utilizing recycled polyester made from PET bottles. This aligns with their science-based climate targets and highlights their commitment to environmental responsibility.
The process transforms sorted, cleaned PET bottles into flakes, melted, purified, and spun into fibers. These are then blended with 35 per cent cotton, creating a fabric that's both comfortable and durable.
Anisha Mukherjee, the Head of Procurement & Sustainability, highlights the environmental benefits of this fabric blend comprising 65 per cent recycled polyester and 35 per cent cotton. She emphasizes that utilizing recycled polyester helps divert plastic waste, thus reducing the need for virgin polyester production, which is energy-intensive and emits greenhouse gases.
As per Textile Exchange, recycled polyester offers 30 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to virgin versions, saving energy and water. Importantly, it keeps plastic out of landfills and oceans. Jayant Roy, Managing Director, notes this blend provides a balance of qualities. The fabric is soft and breathable while also being durable and long-lasting, contributing to the reduction of textile waste.
Recycling polyester uses significantly less energy than virgin production, and the cotton blend further lowers the water footprint. This innovative fabric addresses resource depletion and pollution concerns while delivering high quality and versatility.
Roy acknowledges that the enthusiastic reception from a significant customer in South India validates their shift towards eco-friendly materials. Lindstrom Oy, the parent company, stands among more than 4,500 firms with science-based climate targets and is part of the 2,897 entities committed to net-zero targets. As sustainability continues to gain traction, adopting such solutions becomes imperative for fostering a greener future.
