M&S reverses alpaca wool ban after new standards introduced.

Fashion retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) is allowing alpaca wool back into its clothing lines, reversing a 2020 ban prompted by animal welfare concerns. The change follows the launch of the Responsible Alpaca Standard (RAS), which M&S considers sufficient to ensure ethical sourcing.

M&S previously banned alpaca wool after an investigation by PETA highlighted potential animal cruelty in alpaca farming. However, the RAS assures M&S that alpaca wool can be sourced responsibly. M&S says the RAS will be the minimum requirement for all alpaca wool in its products, valuing both the quality of the fiber and traditional production methods.

PETA's response is still unknown, but criticism is expected as they have previously called the RAS inadequate in preventing animal suffering.
