MMCF producers make strides in sustainability, Canopy Report shows

Canopy's annual Hot Button Report reveals significant progress in the man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) industry. A record 71 per cent of rated MMCF producers have achieved green shirt status or higher, signifying their commitment to eliminating Ancient and Endangered Forests and prioritizing circular, low-carbon fibres. This represents 53 per cent of the global MMCF supply.
Three global leaders - Aditya Birla, Lenzing, and Tangshan Sanyou, have earned the highest rating, demonstrating that sustainable practices are achievable worldwide. This year's report comes as demand for MMCFs surges, with a significant portion of the increased capacity stemming from producers with lower sustainability ratings. While there's been progress, the industry still needs to collaborate to scale Next Gen materials and bring them to market.
Canopy's latest report highlights significant advancements in sustainable practices within the global MMCF industry, with 97.5 per cent of production now rated for sustainability. Four producers achieved partial dark green status, while leading manufacturers such as Tangshan Sanyou and Yibin Grace from China, along with global leaders like Aditya Birla, Lenzing, and Eastman, attained dark green shirts. Nearly all engaged producers are also focusing on developing or utilizing low-carbon Next Gen alternatives, further advancing sustainability in the sector.
Canopy's Founder and Executive Director, Nicole Rycroft, praised the top-performing producers and emphasized the importance of industry collaboration to drive sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of MMCF production.
