Mysuru's mega silk cluster revives after seven years.

Facing delays for seven years, the Chamundeshwari Mega Silk Cluster is finally set to be developed on a 10-acre plot near Belavadi. Sanctioned by the government in 2017 at a budget of Rs 49 crore, the project aims to revitalize sericulture, a traditional industry in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Ramanagar districts.

The cluster is expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the region, promoting the local economy and providing a much-needed boost to sericulture and related industries. The Karnataka State Textile Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSTIDCL) is spearheading the project, overcoming hurdles like land acquisition.

The project cost is shared by the Union government (60 per cent), state government (20 per cent), and entrepreneurs (20 per cent). A detailed project report has been prepared, outlining essential infrastructure like roads, drainage, water, power, and waste management. The cluster will also house training facilities, a bank, and an ATM.

The cluster will feature 24 industrial units for yarn dyeing, warping, fabric dyeing, and printing. While the initial project cost was Rs 49.2 crore, delays led to a revised estimate of Rs 76 crore. However, the government has directed KSTIDCL to complete the project within the original budget.

With tenders floated, construction work is expected to begin soon upon completion of the awarding process. Expediting the project is crucial to create jobs, support local businesses, and revitalize the region's silk industry, as emphasized by Mysuru Industries Association secretary Suresh Kumar Jain.
