The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has opened the ‘Eri Silk Spinning Mill’ at the Integrated Textile Park in Mushalpur, Assam, built at an investment of $1.74 million (Rs 14.92 crore) from the North Eastern Council (NEC).

The state-of-the-art mill, the largest of its kind in the region, has 960 spindles with a daily production capacity of 461 kg. Its spread over 12,916 sq. ft. Inaugurated by Pramod Boro, CEM of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), the facility will directly employ 375 people and indirectly benefit 50,000 households once operational.

The mill, equipped with advanced machinery like degumming and reeling systems, aims to boost local cocoon production and enhance the socio-economic development of the region. It will require 230 metric tons of Eri cocoon annually and help curb the export of unprocessed cocoons from the Northeast. Eri silk, known for its eco-friendly and cruelty-free production, is gaining global demand. The mill will produce high-quality yarn, fulfilling the handloom sector’s needs across the Northeast. In a significant achievement, NEHHDC also secured the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification for its Eri silk in 2024, ensuring it meets global sustainability standards.
