Odisha to be declared tussar silk state, Centre plans major boost for weavers

Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh announced that Odisha will soon be declared a tussar silk state, aiming to enhance silk production and support weavers. Of the 132 tonnes of silk produced in India, tussar accounts for 131 tonnes, with Odisha contributing a significant share.
Singh stated that the Centre, in collaboration with the state government and the National Silk Board, will develop Odisha as a silk production hub. One district will be selected for focused textile development, ensuring market linkages and linking it to tourism. The initiative aims to help weavers earn Rs 20,000 - Rs 25,000 per month.
Discussing the Union Budget, Singh highlighted that India’s annual budget has grown from Rs 16 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 51 lakh crore in 2025-26, with increased allocations for railways, highways, and ports. Odisha is set to benefit significantly.
The minister also addressed rising cancer cases in Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha, announcing plans to establish daycare centers at district hospitals for free treatment. Additionally, 120 new air connectivity destinations will be introduced, with new airports planned in Sambalpur, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, and Keonjhar.
